Mosquito and Midge Fly Management
Aquatic Consulting & Testing, Inc. is one of the only commercial laboratory and consulting firms providing vector and nuisance insect monitoring, identification, and management on a routine basis. Midge flies, a common nuisance to lakeside communities, have been monitored in the adult and larval stages using New Jersey Light Traps and Ekman Dredge samplers, respectively. Recommended management options have included larvicides and introduction of biological predators. Mosquito monitoring and management has been provided for private and municipal wastewater treatment facilities, constructed wetlands, urban lakes and parks, storm water retention basins, and flood control facilities. Programs have included tracking of encephalitis-related mosquito species and testing for arbovirus using Vec Test® and RAMP® assays. AC&T has provided services for some of the more notable regional projects including: the Tres Rios Demonstration Constructed Wetland, City of Phoenix Rio Salado Project, Cave Buttes Recreational Area, the El Rio Restoration Project, Tucson Sweetwater Wetland, City of Tempe Town Lake and Rio Salado Projects, and the Central Avra Valley Storage and Recovery Project.
The AC&T staff includes an ASPCC-licensed Aquatics Qualifying Party and four State-licensed Aquatics Applicators. AC&T has the unique ability to not only monitor nuisance insects and health vectors, but to make recommendations, produce plans, and provide remedial services. AC&T has produced nuisance and vector integrated-management plans for the Cities of Phoenix, Tempe, Scottsdale, and Tucson and for a number of private developments in Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and Texas. The plans include site-specific basin and habitat design, flow management, and biological and chemical control techniques. AC&T provides vector control equipment and the staff has made chemical applications for both nuisance midge flies and mosquito vectors.
